Diplomats from 70+ Nations to Converge on Accra for ‘A Night with the Diplomats’ Gala
On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the chandeliers of Labadi Beach Hotel will light up for what has quietly become Africa’s most exclusive diplomatic soirée: A Night with the Diplomats.
Now in its tenth year, the black-tie event — hosted by broadcaster Harriet Nartey, and her Diplomatic Affairs Media team — will bring together ambassadors from more than 70 countries, Ghanaian cabinet ministers, CEOs of some of the continent’s biggest conglomerates, and influential Pan-African voices under one roof.
This year’s theme is blunt and urgent: Economic Diplomacy and Africa’s Industrialisation Agenda – Building Africa’s Integrated Future.
“For nearly a decade I’ve interviewed global leaders and foreign ministers on television,” says Nartey, host of the long-running Diplomatic Affairs TV show. “But I realised the real conversations — the ones that move billions in trade and investment — happen off-camera, over drinks, when the red lights go off. This night is where those conversations finally get a proper stage.”
Past editions have quietly catalysed major deals: a Chinese-funded railway extension, a European renewable energy partnership, and several AfCFTA-related joint ventures were first sketched on napkins at previous galas.

This time the focus is squarely on turning diplomatic goodwill into factories, ports, and jobs.
Expect keynote remarks from senior Ghanaian officials, closed-door roundtables on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and late-night networking that often stretches until the harmattan dawn breaks over the Atlantic.
“It’s not just a party,” one European ambassador who has attended three times tells Ghana News Global. “It’s where you see which minister is serious about investment and which ambassador actually has the chequebook. Half the reason I clear my December calendar is this one night.”
Limited sponsorship and partnership slots are still open — a closely guarded secret among Accra’s corporate elite — with proceeds supporting diplomatic media training across the continent.
The event offers a rare glimpse of the machinery that quietly shapes Africa’s tomorrow, all happening under crystal chandeliers and the sound of smooth highlife music.

Build a War Chest: Theo Acheampong Makes Case for Leveraging Gold to Boost Reserves
Economist and policy analyst Dr. Theo Acheampong has advocated for Ghana to aggressively leverage its gold reserves to build a stronger economic “war chest” capable of cushioning against external shocks. In a March 2, 2026, opinion piece, he argued that the government should allocate a larger portion of gold production to strategic reserves rather than immediate export, drawing lessons from countries like Singapore and Norway that use commodity wealth for stabilization funds. He noted that Ghana’s current gold-backed reserves strategy is promising but underutilized, and scaling it could provide fiscal buffers against oil price volatility, currency depreciation, and global crises. The call aligns with ongoing discussions on Ghana’s gold-for-oil barter and reserve-building policies.

Are We Tying Down Growth? Finance Professor Flags Concerns on Gold Reserve Policy
A finance professor has raised concerns that Ghana’s emerging policy of tying a portion of gold production to domestic reserves and local currency support could inadvertently constrain economic growth if not carefully calibrated. In a March 2, 2026, interview on JoyNews, the academic, Prof William Kwasi Preprah, warned that over-allocating gold to reserves instead of export earnings might reduce foreign exchange inflows, limit liquidity for private sector investment, and slow industrial expansion. While acknowledging the benefits of building buffers against currency volatility and external shocks, he urged a balanced approach with clear targets, transparency, and independent oversight to avoid stifling growth in manufacturing, infrastructure, and job creation.
