US Embassy in Accra Says Thousands of New Visa Slots Opened

Published

on

The United States Embassy in Accra has announced a significant expansion in visa processing capacity, opening thousands of additional non-immigrant visa appointment slots as it prepares for heightened travel demand ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on its official communication channels, the Embassy confirmed that many of the newly opened slots are immediately available, a move aimed at easing anticipated pressure from Ghanaian residents planning to travel to the tournament, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico starting in June 2026.

โ€œEmbassy Accra continues to process non-immigrant visa applications,โ€ the statement said, adding a direct advisory to football fans: โ€œPlanning to travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup? If you do not have a valid U.S. visa, we encourage you to apply early.โ€

Managing Expected Surge in Demand

The decision to release a large number of visa appointment slots well ahead of the tournament is seen as a proactive effort to prevent the long backlogs and appointment shortages that have often accompanied major international events in the past.

With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams and Ghanaโ€™s Black Stars qualifying for the global showpiece, travel demand from Ghana and across West Africa is expected to rise sharply. The Embassyโ€™s early intervention is intended to streamline processing for legitimate travelers seeking to attend matches, engage in tourism, or participate in related activities in the United States.

Diplomatic and travel analysts say the move reflects both logistical planning and recognition of Ghanaโ€™s strong football culture, which traditionally drives significant outbound travel during major tournaments.

Warning Against Visa Scams

Alongside the announcement, the Embassy reiterated a standard but critical warning to applicants, urging them to use only official channels when scheduling visa interviews.

โ€œReminder to apply via the official U.S. visa appointment website,โ€ the statement noted, directing applicants to the Embassyโ€™s authorized visa portal.

Such advisories are aimed at protecting applicants from fraudulent third-party websites and agents that often charge excessive fees or provide misleading services.

Approval Not Guaranteed

The Embassy also stated that securing an interview appointment does not automatically guarantee visa approval.

Applicants must still meet all U.S. non-immigrant visa requirements and successfully complete the interview process.

Prospective travelers are therefore encouraged to prepare documentation early and ensure their applications are complete and accurate to avoid delays.

With less than six months to the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, the Embassyโ€™s announcement is likely to be welcomed by Ghanaian football fans and travelers eager to make plans well in advance.

President Mahama Urges Prayers for Peace in Middle East

Published

on

Accra, Ghana โ€“ President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned that the escalating war in the Middle East โ€” involving joint U.S.โ€“Israel strikes on Iran and Iranโ€™s retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the Gulf โ€” is no longer a regional issue but one with far-reaching consequences for the entire world, including Ghana.

Speaking during an Iftar gathering at Jubilee House on March 16, 2026, the president appealed directly to the Muslim community to intensify prayers for divine intervention and a swift end to hostilities.

โ€œThe conflict between the U.S. and Israel, and Iran, is affecting not only the Middle East; itโ€™s affecting the whole world,โ€ Mahama stated. โ€œAnd so we pray that Allah will touch the hearts of everybody involved in this conflict and bring peace to the people in the area.โ€

The presidentโ€™s remarks come as the conflict enters its third week, with reported U.S.โ€“Israel operations targeting Iranian strategic sites โ€” including the killing of senior officials โ€” and Iran launching ballistic missiles and drones toward the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil passes, has seen significant disruptions, pushing Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel.

Ghana, a net importer of petroleum products, remains highly vulnerable to these shocks. Higher global crude prices typically feed into elevated fuel import costs, which regulators and oil marketing companies often pass on to consumers through adjusted pricing windows. The resulting increases in petrol, diesel, and LPG prices can drive up transport fares, electricity generation costs (where fuel-based plants are involved), and the overall price of goods and services as transport and production expenses rise.

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama has already flagged the risk, warning that sustained volatility in global energy markets could undermine the countryโ€™s inflation outlook and broader economic stability.

The conflict has also touched Ghanaian nationals directly. Two Ghanaians were among those injured by shrapnel from intercepted drones near Dubai International Airport, though UAE authorities confirmed minor injuries and continued airport operations. Separately, Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL in Lebanon have come under attack amid hostilities involving Israeli forces, Iran-aligned groups, and regional militias.

President Mahamaโ€™s call for prayers and calm reflects both spiritual solidarity and pragmatic recognition of the domestic economic ripple effects of prolonged instability in the Middle East.
