Ghanaian-American entrepreneur Kofi Asante has secured $50 million in seed funding for Bluecore Energy, a startup developing small, modular nuclear reactors mounted on floating barges to deliver zero-emission power directly to ports, data centers, and critical infrastructure.

The raise comes just two months after Bluecore Energy emerged from stealth with a $10 million oversubscribed pre-seed round, and represents a major milestone for a founder building in one of the world’s most challenging and heavily regulated industries.

Bluecore Energy, headquartered at the Port of Long Beach in California, is developing water-cooled nuclear power reactors designed to operate aboard floating energy barges. The company’s initial system is being built to power the equivalent of approximately 15,000 homes, or to scale up to meet the power needs of a major port.

“Traditionally, getting more electricity at scale can take many years; rather than waiting years for new power infrastructure to reach the point of demand, our floating nuclear power plant is designed to bring the power source directly to it in the matter of days,” Asante said.

The startup has assembled a team that reads like a who’s who of elite engineering talent: SpaceX engineers, Black nuclear engineers, former Toyota manufacturers, Black Ivy League PhDs from Blue Origin, and one of the first women to serve as a nuclear submarine officer.

Since January, Asante has devoted himself full-time to Bluecore Energy, and the company’s progress has been rapid. In the first nine months since its founding, Bluecore has secured a port terminal, taken delivery of barges, initiated engagement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), engaged the U.S. Coast Guard, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Port of Long Beach, and built a mission-driven team of nuclear scientists, Navy nuclear submarine and ship officers, and rocket and automotive leaders.

“Less than 2 months ago, we came out of stealth. In the first 9 months from founding the company we now have a port terminal secured, barges delivered, test reactor, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) engagement kicked off, US Coast Guard engaged, MOU between U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Port of Long Beach signed, and a mission driven team of nuclear scientists, navy nuclear submarine and ship officers, rocket and automotive leaders,” Asante wrote on LinkedIn.

“Our focus is simple. Create and deliver zero-emission energy as safely and quickly as possible. Over 3 billion people live within an hour of water. We want to power them all. Excited about our pace, but not satisfied until everyone has access to clean energy,” he added.

The seed round was led by Silverton Partners, with continued participation from existing investors including Slauson & Co., Harlem Capital, Precursor Ventures, LMNT, Visible Hands VC, Karman Ventures, and Hartbeat Ventures. New investors joining the round include MaC Ventures, Collab Capital, Vanderbilt, Black Angel Group, and NBAYoungboy, among others.

The Port of Long Beach, where Bluecore is headquartered, is one of the world’s largest ports and has been striving to become one of the greenest. By deploying floating nuclear power plants directly to ports and coastal infrastructure, Bluecore aims to provide a scalable, clean energy solution for the estimated 3 billion people worldwide who live within an hour of water.

The company’s technology represents a potential paradigm shift in how ports, coastal cities, and maritime operations access reliable power — moving away from fossil fuels without waiting for traditional grid infrastructure to catch up.

For Asante, a Ghanaian-American founder, the raise is also a testament to the growing presence of diaspora-led innovation in some of the most capital-intensive and technically demanding sectors of the global economy.

Ghana has launched a major, game-changing economic initiative by inaugurating a new, independent Fiscal Council designed to keep a strict watch on how the government spends taxpayer money.

The bold move is aimed directly at restoring international confidence and winning back global investors who have been wary of the country’s financial management.

President John Dramani Mahama swore in the five-member council at the Presidency on Tuesday, establishing it under the Public Financial Management (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1136).

The council is tasked with providing independent, credible, and objective oversight of Ghana’s fiscal policies, with a specific mandate to promote spending discipline, ensure long-term debt sustainability, and bring transparency to the use of public funds.

By creating this independent body, Ghana is sending a powerful message to international finance markets, the IMF, and the World Bank that it is serious about ending reckless spending. The council will act as a watchdog, scrutinizing the government’s budget decisions and assessing whether they comply with established financial rules.

President Mahama emphasized that the council assumes its role at a crucial time when investors and development partners are demanding greater prudence and accountability. Crucially, to make the move credible to foreign markets, the President made a firm pledge to respect the Council’s independence and assured members of full institutional support to execute their mandate without political interference.

“Your responsibility is to scrutinise the Government’s fiscal decisions, assess compliance with established rules, and provide sound recommendations in the national interest,” President Mahama told the council. “Your work must be guided by evidence and the national interest, without fear, favour, or political consideration.”

He warned that fiscal discipline is not just a legal requirement, but a moral obligation. “Fiscal responsibility must not be regarded merely as a statutory requirement. It is a moral obligation to present and future generations,” he stated.

The “game-changing” nature of the move is further amplified by the heavyweight composition of the council. It is chaired by Dr. Emmanuel Oteng Kumah, an international economic consultant and former Board Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank Ghana. He is joined by Dr. Henry Akpenamawu Kofi Wampah, a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Professor Patrick Opoku Asuming of the University of Ghana Business School; Mr. Leslie Dwight Mensah, a think tank representative; and Mr. J. Kweku Bedu-Addo, a former public policy expert at the Ministry of Finance.

For international investors, having a former Central Bank Governor and a former Standard Chartered executive guarding the public purse signals that the oversight will be both rigorous and professionally independent.

The ceremony was attended by key figures including Chief of Staff Dr. Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and Presidential Adviser on the Economy, Mr. Seth Terkper.

With this new council now in place, Ghana aims to prove to the world that its economic reforms are built on solid foundations, paving the way for renewed investment and sustainable growth.

Ghana’s persistent diplomatic efforts have yielded a formal breakthrough, as the African Union (AU) Commission has issued a written assurance to the government that its petition against xenophobic attacks in South Africa will be tabled for deliberation at the next AU Summit in January 2027.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made the announcement during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, where he provided an update on the petition originally filed on May 6, 2026.

“I can therefore confirm that the African Union Commission has formally written to the Government of Ghana in response to our petition and has clearly indicated that the matter will be tabled for deliberations at the AU Summit, expected to convene in January 2027,” Ablakwa stated.

The petition, addressed to the Chairperson of the AU Commission, highlighted the loss of lives, attacks on African migrants, destruction of businesses and investments, and the broader threats to African unity, free movement, and continental integration.

Ghana’s position has been clear: the best way to address the crisis is not to look away, but to bring it into the open for an honest, good-faith discussion on its root causes.

“Ghana believes that the best way to address this matter is not to look away and pretend nothing serious has happened, but to bring it into the open and have an honest, good-faith discussion on this concern and how best to address it,” Ablakwa added.

The announcement comes as a significant victory for Ghana’s diplomatic tactics. The petition was initially expected to be considered at the AU’s Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.

However, following the postponement of that meeting, Ghana did not relent. Instead, Accra secured the unanimous endorsement of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government to continue pursuing the matter at the continental level.

The issue was further escalated by President John Dramani Mahama during bilateral talks with the AU Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, on the sidelines of the AU Extraordinary Summit held in Accra in July. During those talks, President Mahama reiterated the call for the issue to be formally placed on the AU agenda, arguing that ignoring the crisis would not address its underlying causes.

President Mahama stressed that Ghana harbors no ill will towards South Africa but remains deeply concerned about the attacks and the significant losses suffered by foreign nationals forced to abandon their investments and return to their home countries. He noted that placing the matter on the agenda would provide South Africa with a formal, constructive platform to present its perspective while allowing African leaders to collectively work towards a lasting solution.

Chairperson Youssouf has acknowledged the need for continental discussion, noting that nationals of several African countries have been affected. He also disclosed that he had raised the matter directly with South African authorities during a recent visit to the country. While he commended the South African government for publicly condemning the violence, he expressed deep concern about the apparent impunity of some perpetrators.

The formal commitment from the AU comes after a difficult period for many Ghanaians. Between May 27 and September 4, 2026, Ghana evacuated 1,964 nationals from South Africa following renewed xenophobic violence and significant threats to the safety of its citizens.

With the AU Summit now confirmed as the stage for this critical dialogue in January 2027, Ghana is poised to shift the conversation from bilateral grievances to a broad, continental strategy to protect African citizens and preserve the spirit of Pan-African integration.
