Designing Africa’s Future: Why the Nomadic African Studio Public Lecture in Accra Is One to Watch

Published

on

The future of Africa may be taking shape in concrete, timber and clay—but it begins with a conversation. This July, Accra will host one of those rare evenings where architecture, culture and innovation meet under one roof as the Nomadic African Studio Public Lecture welcomes acclaimed Rwandan architect Christian Benimana for an inspiring discussion on the future of African cities.

Held at the AFI Headquarters in Osu, the event brings together students, architects, creatives, urban planners and curious members of the public for a thought-provoking exploration of how design can improve everyday life.

Far more than a traditional lecture, it offers a chance to engage with ideas that are transforming how African communities are built, lived in and imagined.

A Platform for African Design Leadership

Christian Benimana, Co-Executive Director and Senior Principal at MASS in Kigali, Rwanda, has become one of the continent’s leading advocates for architecture that responds to local needs, cultures and environments. His work champions the idea that African cities should be designed by Africans who understand the communities they serve.

The Nomadic African Studio reflects this same philosophy by creating spaces where knowledge, creativity and collaboration can travel across borders. Hosting the lecture in Accra underscores Ghana’s growing reputation as a hub for architecture, design and cultural exchange in West Africa.

An Evening of Ideas and Connection

The programme begins with drinks at Haptic Bar, offering guests an informal opportunity to meet fellow designers, artists and innovators before the lecture starts. Following an introduction, Benimana will share insights into nurturing the next generation of African architects and creative leaders, before opening the floor for an interactive question-and-answer session.

Visitors can expect an atmosphere filled with curiosity, meaningful conversations and fresh perspectives rather than formal ceremony. It is an event where every attendee, regardless of background, becomes part of a larger discussion about Africa’s future.

Why You Should Be There

For international visitors, the lecture offers a window into the ideas influencing one of the world’s fastest-growing urban regions. For Ghanaians, it is a chance to see how local identity, heritage and innovation can work together to shape cities that are sustainable, inclusive and proudly African.

Whether you are passionate about architecture or simply interested in the continent’s cultural evolution, this evening promises something lasting: the opportunity to hear Africa imagine itself, and to witness the conversations helping turn that vision into reality.

Velukusi Festival: Re-enacting the Ewe Escape to Freedom in Ve-Deme

Published

Water splashes against an imaginary wall as people gather to witness one of the most powerful stories in Ewe history.

In Ve-Deme, in Ghana’s Volta Region, the Velukusi Festival brings an ancestral struggle for freedom into the present, transforming a story of oppression, courage and escape into a living act of remembrance.

Celebrated during the first week of October, Velukusi commemorates the traditional account of the Ewes’ escape from the cruel rule of King Aghorkoli in Togo. According to the story passed down through generations, the Ewes were held behind a formidable wall.

Determined to break free, they repeatedly poured water onto a section of the structure until it weakened and collapsed.

Their escape did not end with the fallen wall. To conceal their direction of travel, they walked backwards, leaving misleading footprints for those who might pursue them. This extraordinary detail has become a defining feature of the festival’s historical re-enactment.

Bringing Ancestral Courage to Life

During Velukusi, the community revisits the escape through a dramatic performance that allows younger generations and visitors to connect with the experience of their forebears.

The re-enactment gives physical expression to a story that speaks of collective determination, ingenuity and the enduring human desire for freedom.

The festival reaches its climax with a colourful display of traditional cloths and beads, followed by a grand durbar of chiefs.

Traditional regalia, customary leadership and communal gatherings place Ewe identity at the centre of the celebration.

A Living Heritage

For the people of Ve-Deme, Velukusi is more than a historical commemoration. It strengthens community bonds and keeps ancestral memory alive at a time when younger generations are increasingly exposed to global influences.

For visitors exploring Ghana, the festival offers an opportunity to encounter the Volta Region’s heritage through storytelling, ceremony and traditional craftsmanship.

Velukusi reminds us that freedom is worth remembering—and that experiencing the traditions of Ve-Deme is a meaningful way to understand the resilience of the Ewe people.
