Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao to Headline Upcoming Pan-African Unity Summit in Ghana
Accra, Ghana – Ghana is set to host a major Pan-African heritage and reconnection tour in September 2026, coordinated through diaspora networks including Bijou Caribbean Connect and the State of the African Diaspora movement.
The initiative is expected to attract participants of African descent from across the Caribbean, the United States, Europe, and other regions.
Building on the momentum of previous return initiatives such as the landmark Year of Return, the week-long programme aims to deepen historical awareness, strengthen identity, and expand economic and cultural partnerships between Africa and its global diaspora.
The tour will begin in Accra with orientation sessions, cultural showcases, and networking events, before proceeding to the Central Region for visits to the historic Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle — solemn landmarks of the transatlantic slave trade that serve as powerful spaces of reflection and reconnection.
The overarching theme, “Return, Reconnection, and Pan African Solidarity,” underscores a dual purpose: healing from historical trauma while building a forward-looking vision rooted in collaboration, empowerment, and shared identity.
A major highlight will be the lineup of influential speakers and thought leaders, including Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, former African Union Ambassador to the United States and a prominent Pan-African advocate, as well as international activist Louis Georges Tin, and grassroots voices such as Kink Xenoozi and Solomon Watson.

Participants will also engage with key cultural institutions such as the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre for Pan-African Culture through lectures, exhibitions, and symbolic ceremonies. Business and investment forums will explore opportunities in tourism, real estate, technology, agriculture, and creative industries, aligning with Ghana’s strategy to position itself as a gateway for diaspora investment into Africa.
Community engagement with traditional leaders, local entrepreneurs, and youth groups will further enrich the experience, alongside cultural nights, storytelling sessions, music, and traditional ceremonies.
Organisers emphasise that such tours are increasingly vital in a global context where identity, belonging, and cultural heritage are being actively re-examined. For many participants, the journey represents more than travel — it is a return to origin, a reclaiming of narrative, and a step toward collective progress.
The September 2026 tour is being framed not only as a cultural event but as a continuing movement that positions Ghana as a leading destination for diaspora reconnection, healing, and Pan-African collaboration.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister Slams UK Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch Over Slavery Reparations Remarks
Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has sharply criticised UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch for suggesting Britain should have voted against a recent United Nations resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity.
In a strongly worded response, Ablakwa urged Badenoch to revisit the historical record, pointing out that after the abolition of slavery in the British Empire, UK taxpayers compensated slave owners — not the enslaved Africans or their descendants.
He noted that compensation payments to slave owners continued until 2015, with estimates suggesting the total amount, adjusted for today’s value, exceeds £2 billion.
“What the conservative leader has said, Kemi Badenoch, that’s an opinion, an opinion that is clearly not supported by the fact,” Ablakwa stated. “If you think about the historical fact which cannot be contested, that slave masters were compensated in the UK and taxpayers… she was not concerned about taxpayers paying the slave owners who were compensated because slavery was abolished.”
He added that it was “really unfortunate, really regrettable and unconscionable” that Badenoch appeared more concerned about modern UK taxpayers than the victims of slavery and their descendants who received no compensation. Ablakwa concluded by hoping Badenoch would “take a second look at her history notes.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on March 26, Badenoch expressed displeasure at the UK’s abstention under the Labour government, writing:
“Russia, China and Iran vote with others to demand trillions in reparations from UK taxpayers…and the Labour government abstain! Britain led the fight to end slavery. Why didn’t Starmer’s representative vote against this? Ignorance…or cowardice? We shouldn’t be paying for a crime we helped eradicate and still fight today.”
These exchanges come after UN General Assembly adopted Ghana’s resolution on March 25, 2026, with 123 nations voting in favour. The United Kingdom was among the countries that abstained.
