Ghana legislator Defends Call to Scrap OSP
Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamakpor has publicly defended his role in proposing a controversial private member’s bill in Ghana’s Parliament that sought to repeal the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) Act.
He is insisting that the intent was to bolster, not weaken, the nation’s anti-corruption framework.
The bill, which had triggered major political and civil society backlash, was jointly sponsored by Dafeamakpor and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, but later withdrawn at the request of President John Dramani Mahama amid public concern.
Critics, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and civil society groups, argued the repeal could undermine Ghana’s fight against graft.
In interviews and parliamentary statements, Dafeamakpor maintained that the proposal was driven by a desire to make anti-corruption institutions more effective.
“We must move beyond symbolic laws to practical enforcement,” he stated, arguing structural reform—not abolition—should be the focus.
Nonetheless, the attempt to abolish the OSP sparked a political storm. The Minority Caucus in Parliament demanded the resignation of Dafeamakpor and Ayariga, labelling the move “embarrassing” and alleging it undermined Ghana’s accountability architecture.
President Mahama’s intervention, widely seen by analysts as a reaffirmation of his government’s anti-corruption commitment, was supported by groups such as the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), which said the president’s opposition to repeal underscored the importance of preserving key institutions.
Amid calls from opposition figures accusing the presidency of interfering with legislative independence, the Majority leadership has pledged to reconsider their position on the legislation, echoing the president’s caution about hastily dismantling established anti-corruption mechanisms.
