How Ghanaians Can Access the MahamaCares Healthcare Program

Published

on

ACCRA – The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, has clarified the step-by-step process for Ghanaians seeking to benefit from the program.

With the nationwide rollout scheduled for June 2026, here is everything you need to know in simple, easy-to-follow points.

First, Check If You Meet the 3 Basic Requirements

To qualify for support under MahamaCares, you must tick all three boxes below:

  1. You are a Ghanaian citizen (proof of citizenship required).
  2. You hold an active National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card – your NHIS must be valid and up to date.
  3. You have a medical condition that falls within the approved list of conditions covered by the fund (specific conditions are determined by the program’s medical guidelines).

The Entry Point Is Always a Doctor – Not the Secretariat

This is the most important rule to remember: You cannot walk directly into the MahamaCares secretariat to request support.

  • The application process is 100% digital.
  • Your journey begins with a specialist clinician (doctor) at one of the enlisted hospitals.
  • That doctor will initiate an application on your behalf through a dedicated digital platform.

Bottom line: If you are a patient, you do not apply yourself. Your doctor applies for you.

You Must Be Treated at One of the 29 Enlisted Hospitals

The Patient Support Program is delivered through 29 hospitals distributed across Ghana. They include:

Teaching Hospitals:

  • Korle Bu Teaching Hospital
  • Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital
