Top Headlines in Ghana: December 6, 2025 – Security Warnings, Spiritual Galamsey Debate, National Farmer Honoured, Otto Addo’s Confidence, Plus More
Ghana’s weekend news cycle is being dominated by warnings from political leaders, fierce debates over illegal mining, an inspiring national farming milestone, a confident message from the Black Stars camp, and major defence acquisitions approved by Parliament.
Muntaka Warns Online ‘Fearmongers’: “Stop or We Will Come After You”
Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has issued a sharp warning to Ghanaians spreading panic online, accusing some social media users of intentionally heightening fears about national security.
Muntaka said such behaviour undermines stability and vowed that authorities “will come after” individuals weaponising misinformation. His comments reflect growing tension between the political class and a restless online citizenry increasingly vocal about economic hardship and governance concerns.
“Galamsey Is a Spiritual Crisis” – Prof. Frimpong-Manso
The national conversation about illegal mining took an unexpected turn after Prof. Joseph Frimpong-Manso, a prominent former government official, argued that galamsey is not merely an economic problem but a spiritual crisis.
He said the destruction of lands and water bodies reveals a deeper moral decay, calling for both policy reforms and spiritual renewal. His remarks highlight public frustration with the state’s inability to curb the multi-billion-cedi environmental threat.
82-Year-Old Named 2025 National Best Farmer
In a moment that captured the nation’s admiration, 82-year-old Alhaji Mohammed Haruna was crowned the 2025 Overall Best National Farmer.
The octogenarian’s win is a striking reminder of the generational commitment anchoring Ghana’s agricultural sector. His decades-long dedication—spanning crops, livestock, and mentorship—earned praise across the political divide.
At a time when rural youth participation in agriculture continues to decline, Haruna’s story offers a powerful counter-narrative.
“We Can Beat Anyone” – Otto Addo on Ghana’s World Cup Draw
Black Stars coach Otto Addo struck an optimistic tone following Ghana’s placement in a challenging World Cup group.
In remarks carried by Joy Sports, Addo said Ghana “can beat anyone” if players maintain discipline and confidence. His comments reflect a strategic shift—from cautious optimism to bold assertiveness—as the national team pushes to reclaim its standing on the global stage.
Parliament Approves Helicopters and New Presidential Jet for Ghana Air Force
Parliament has approved major defence procurements, including four helicopters and a new presidential jet, in deals with Airbus and Dassault Aviation.
Key details:
- €125.97 million for one H160 and three H175 helicopters (Airbus Helicopter SAS)
- $60.68 million for one Falcon 6X (Dassault Aviation)
- Government financing spans four years, with the first €62.5 million installment scheduled for December 2025.
The acquisitions have stirred debate among critics who question the timing given Ghana’s current fiscal tightening. Supporters, however, argue the aircraft are essential for national security, VIP travel efficiency, and improved operational capacity for the Ghana Air Force.

American Expats in Ghana Get a Helping Hand to Vote in 2026 U.S. Midterm Elections
With the 2026 U.S. midterm elections fast approaching, American citizens living in Ghana are receiving a timely boost to ensure their voices are heard from thousands of miles away.
The Vote from Abroad Team in Ghana is set to host a specialized voter registration and assistance event this weekend, designed to navigate the complexities of overseas voting.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, at 2:00 PM (Ghana time) at Theia’s Coffee House in the Airport Residential Area of Accra. Volunteers will be on the ground to provide trained assistance, guiding participants through the process of registering to vote and requesting their absentee ballots. The organizers have set a goal to register at least 50 new overseas voters in a single afternoon.
“This is a crucial opportunity,” said Lenny Baer, a volunteer with the Vote from Abroad Team in Ghana. “Many US citizens often don’t realize they can vote from overseas. We can, and our votes help determine the outcome of elections across the US.”
Why This Outreach Matters
This initiative is part of a broader effort by Democrats Abroad, the official arm of the Democratic Party representing Americans living outside the United States . The organization operates a volunteer-run network with chapters on six continents, working to protect the voting rights of the estimated 9 million Americans living abroad .
While the event is hosted by Democrats Abroad, the organizers emphasize that it is open to all U.S. citizens living in Ghana, irrespective of political party affiliation . This nonpartisan approach to voter assistance is a core tenant of the organization’s mission, reflecting their commitment to helping any American facing voting challenges . Through their platform, VoteFromAbroad.org, they provide a public service that helps citizens register and participate in elections regardless of their political leanings .
Midterm elections historically see lower voter turnout than presidential elections, particularly among overseas voters who often face bureaucratic hurdles or are simply unaware of their eligibility . With all 435 House seats and approximately 36 Senate seats up for grabs in 2026, every single vote—including those from Accra—holds the potential to tip the balance of power in Congress .
How to Participate
For those unable to attend the event in person, organizers have confirmed that a virtual session will be held simultaneously . Interested voters can RSVP through the VoteFromAbroad.org platform to receive the online meeting link and receive the same level of one-on-one assistance in completing their ballot request forms.
Trained voting assistants will also be available to answer questions, help participants complete their Federal Post Card Application (FPCA)—the standard federal form needed to request a ballot—and ensure that their voting rights are protected .
For Americans in Ghana, this Saturday’s event is more than just a registration drive; it is a critical lifeline to the democratic process back home, ensuring that their geographic distance does not translate into political silence.
