Tema Police Gun Down Two Armed Robbers After Brazen Daytime Mobile Money Heist

Accra, Ghana – Israel’s Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has issued a formal apology for the March 6 Israeli strike that injured three Ghanaian soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), describing the incident as a tragic mistake during intense urban combat.

In a detailed interview, Ambassador Gilad took full responsibility on behalf of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), stating:

“We are very sorry for the incident that took place on the 6th of March.”

He confirmed that Israel sent an official letter to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 17 acknowledging the error. The ambassador stressed that the strike was never intentional and dismissed suggestions of deliberate targeting as “completely unfair,” noting that Israel has no reason to attack peacekeepers from a friendly nation like Ghana.

According to Gilad, the incident occurred after Hezbollah militants fired on Israeli forces from positions close to the Ghana Regiment’s base (approximately 500 metres away), injuring an Israeli platoon commander and seven soldiers. In the response to neutralise the source of fire, the IDF inadvertently hit the Ghanaian position. He described this as part of a recurring pattern where Hezbollah uses UNIFIL positions as human shields.

To prevent future incidents, Israel has formally requested UNIFIL to temporarily reposition the Ghanaian troops, calling their current location “the most dangerous place” in South Lebanon due to the frequency of attacks launched from the vicinity.

The apology comes amid growing concern in Ghana over the safety of its peacekeepers serving in the volatile region.

While acknowledging the complexities of modern warfare, the incident has renewed questions about the protection of UN personnel and the tactics used by conflicting parties in southern Lebanon.
