President Mahama Makes Strong Call for African Economic Independence at Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day
In a stirring address that evoked the spirit of Pan-Africanism, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, as Chief Guest at Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12, 2025, urged African leaders to break free from a “rigged” global economic order and pursue true prosperity through value addition, intra-continental trade, and youth empowerment.
Speaking before thousands at Nyayo National Stadium alongside Kenyan President William Ruto, Mahama paid homage to the historic bond between the two nations, rooted in the friendship between independence icons Kwame Nkrumah and Jomo Kenyatta.
“The friendship between our independence leaders has become an enduring flame that has continued to bind our two countries together,” he declared, extending heartfelt greetings from Ghanaians and reaffirming solidarity on Kenya’s milestone republic day.
Mahama stated that while forebears secured political freedom, the current generation must claim economic independence.
“Africa faces many challenges including a global order that is rigged against it,” he said. “We face systems that make us suppliers of unprocessed raw materials and importers of finished products. The time has come for us to add value to Africa’s exports… to claim a fairer share of our natural resource endowment.”
He called for transparent leadership, unleashing the potential of Africa’s youth, and boosting trade via the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
Highlighting Pan-African solidarity beyond the continent, Mahama commended Kenya’s ongoing police mission in Haiti for aiding the “long-suffering people” there and announced Ghana’s deployment of engineers from the 48th Regiment to support Jamaica’s reconstruction after the devastating Hurricane Melissa.
In a poignant moment, Mahama offered condolences on the recent passing of Kenyan statesman Raila Odinga:
“Accept my personal condolence and the sympathy of all Ghanaians on the passing of a great statesman Mzee Raila Odinga. May God grant him peaceful rest.”
The speech, delivered amid vibrant military parades and cultural displays, reflects deepening Ghana-Kenya ties and inspired calls for renewed continental unity across Africa and the diaspora.
