Ghana FA Appoints Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars Head Coach
The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), acting in coordination with key stakeholders, has formally appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The appointment, announced Monday, April 13, 2026, places the veteran Portuguese tactician at the helm for the tournament scheduled to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, beginning June 11, 2026.
Contractual and Governance Context

From a sports governance perspective, the appointment reflects the GFA’s compliance with FIFA’s regulatory framework regarding national team management. Queiroz, who brings a decades-long career including spells at Real Madrid, Manchester United, and as head coach of Portugal and Iran, assumes the role with immediate effect.
The Executive Council—the GFA’s highest decision-making body between Congress sessions—exercised its authority under the Association’s statutes to finalize the appointment after what the GFA described as “working with all key stakeholders.” This language suggests a multi-party negotiation process, likely involving the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Presidential Office, and potentially commercial partners whose contracts include performance clauses tied to World Cup qualification and advancement.
Regulatory Compliance and World Cup Deadlines
Queiroz’s immediate start date is critical for regulatory compliance. Under FIFA World Cup regulations, participating nations must submit preliminary player rosters and finalize team staff credentials well before the tournament’s opening whistle. Ghana’s first group match is scheduled for June 17, 2026, against Panama in Toronto, followed by fixtures against England and Croatia.
The GFA’s announcement stated that Queiroz “begins work immediately,” indicating that time-sensitive obligations—including player selection, training camp logistics, and anti-doping education programs—are now formally under his authority.
A Pedigree of High-Stakes Campaigns
Queiroz’s contract comes with a notable World Cup pedigree. He led South Africa to qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, guided Portugal to the knockout phase in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. His prior roles in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar suggest a contract structure that includes performance incentives tied to progression beyond the group stage—a standard feature in high-level international football management agreements.
The timing of the appointment—approximately two months before the World Cup kickoff—raises interesting legal and operational questions. Late coaching changes can trigger contractual disputes with former staff, affect player morale in ways that implicate bonus structures, and create liability under existing commercial sponsorship agreements that name specific coaching personnel.
However, the GFA’s statement offers no indication of internal friction, instead presenting the move as a unified decision by the Executive Council.
Ghana will face Panama, England, and Croatia in Group play.
Whether Queiroz’s contract extends beyond the 2026 tournament remains undisclosed by the GFA Communications office.

Ghana Star Thomas Partey Pleads Not Guilty to Two Additional Rape Charges in UK Court
London, United Kingdom – Ghanaian international footballer Thomas Partey has pleaded not guilty to two additional rape charges, bringing the total number of rape allegations against him to seven.
The 32-year-old Villarreal midfielder appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, where he denied the new charges relating to a fourth woman in December 2020.
Partey had previously pleaded not guilty to five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault against a third woman, with the alleged offences occurring between 2021 and 2022 while he was playing for Arsenal in the English Premier League.
Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for €50 million ($58.49 million) in 2020 and became a key member of the first team before leaving the club last summer when his contract expired.
He subsequently joined Spanish La Liga side Villarreal.
The midfielder was released on bail following Monday’s hearing. His trial, originally scheduled to begin in November, could now face further delays due to the additional charges.
The case continues to draw significant attention given Partey’s stature as a prominent player for both Arsenal and the Ghana national team, the Black Stars.
