Ghana Condemns ‘Inhumane’ Treatment of its Citizens in Israel, Considers Reciprocal Measures
The Government of Ghana has expressed outrage over what it calls the unjust treatment of Ghanaian travelers by Israeli authorities at Ben Gurion International Airport.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, December 7, involved the detention of seven Ghanaians, including four members of a parliamentary delegation attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference.
According to a statement from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the detained delegation members were held for over five hours before being released following “strenuous diplomatic intervention.”
The remaining three travelers were deported on the next available flight and have since returned to Ghana.
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the treatment of Ghanaian nationals as “extremely provocative, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.”
He dismissed Israeli claims that the delays were caused by alleged non-cooperation from Ghana’s Embassy, stating that Ghana had fully complied with international law.
“The Government of Ghana is appalled at the ill-treatment meted out to our citizens and strongly protests this behaviour,” Ablakwa said in a Facebook post. “Ghana is considering immediate reciprocal action.”
Ghana is expected to summon officials from the Israeli Embassy in Accra on Wednesday, December 10, to demand clarification and ensure the protection of its citizens abroad.
The Ministry has made clear that appropriate diplomatic and reciprocal measures may be taken if Israel fails to resolve the matter satisfactorily.
This incident comes at a time when Ghana and Israel have maintained cooperative relations for decades, making the episode a rare and tense diplomatic challenge.
Analysts note that the strong response signals Ghana’s commitment to protecting its nationals and could have broader implications for bilateral relations if not swiftly resolved.
